East Ranga RIVER

The East Ranga is one of the most productive Atlantic salmon rivers in the world. The season runs for just 120 days, from mid June to early October. with an average annual catch of over 4,000 salmon the river is quite extraordinary, even by high Icelandic standards.

EAST RANGA AN extraordinary SALMON RIVER IN ICELAND.

While the East Ranga is famous for its productivity, an interesting note is the steady growth in numbers of multi sea winter salmon. These fish have an average weight of 14lbs and offer terrific sport throughout the season. Although the majority of salmon are around the 5-7lbs mark, these smaller salmon are particularly notable for their impressive strength:size ratio.

The river is fished over approximately 22 km from an impassable waterfall at the head of Beat 9 down to the junction with the Thvera on Beat 1. Along this length of river, the pools variously sit under high bluffs, curve from cut bank to cut bank or gently ease up to purple lupin lined banks, each beat offering a variety of characteristics and at the same time maintaining enviably attractive fly water.

As any East Ranga ‘regular’ knows, some of the most classic pools hold such a volume of salmon and offer such intense sport, that there remain areas of most beats where fishers can still explore and find new taking spots.

The East Ranga is often referred to as being the “perfect size”. This means large enough to be interesting and keep some of its secrets, but small enough to cover most holding spots well with a 12-14ft double handed rod or indeed a switch or single handed rod in many cases.
