east ranga, cautiously optimistic…
At 10 July the average of 12 fishers have landed 145 salmon for the season. Lower than we would have hoped, but increasing numbers of fish arrive each day and it seems as though the whole of Iceland is experiencing later than normal runs.
Beats 4, 5, 6 and 7 still produce the majority of salmon. But thankfully beats 3 and 2 are beginning to hold and produce fish also. With luck beat 1 will kick in during the next days.
The quality has remained very high, with mostly fish in the 8-19.6lb range (very honest salmon that 19.6lbder!!!) The first few grilse are arriving though – including a 60cm fish at just over 3kgs / 6.6lbs….more like a miniature tuna!
The river continues to behave really well in terms of colour, and conditions have generally been decent. For some reason there are a very high percentage of salmon being lost – probably due to being very fresh and frisky – but nice to have action.
Chef Ulfar treats everyone to amazing meals and Marta and Julita’s attention to detail in the lodge and operations ensures everyone feels well taken care of.
Here’s hoping we see a flood of multi sea winter salmon and grilse arrive after the high tides of 12-15 July.
